Heroes
Sometimes you got to wonder
Out here in the wild, untamed, woodlands.
Your life is short as it is, but now its on borrowed time.
Listening to strange burps, squeaks and the odd throaty growl.
Every shadow, small or big, hides something hideous.
Your senses are raw
hunting, searching to find some kind of safety.
Muscles are tight and sore, ready to defend your fragile life.
There! Movement just around the corner.
Why do we adventure?
Why do we leave our loved ones behind
?
Never knowing that this may be last time we see or hold their faces.
Putting our lives on a tightrope of sanity.
The road is cold and damp.
Everyone is aware, but lost in their own thoughts.
Boots are heavy with caked-on mud, sand between the toes.
The air is thick with surrounding trouble.
Thoughts of last night, before heading out of the city.
Drinking tankards of bad ale, feasting on pastries and meaty stews.
Betting on which of the drunken boys will be tossed out of the pub first.
Flirting with many to see who would be sharing your bed, maybe for the last time.
Why do we adventure?
Why do we leave the comforts of home, the warm body of a companion?
We remember the warm smiles, and use those to bring us back.
Life in the city has no place out here.
Friends are covered in creatures blood
Weapons are broken, stained and chipped.
Terrible
morbid things we have witnessed.
Haunting nightmares that never ever go away.
Wounds are cleaned and stitched,
Cracked ribs and sprained ankles are healed with perfection.
We laugh at how close we were to dying
Then the reality sets in
and a very cold chill runs down your spine.
Sometimes there is a light ahead,
Something winks and shines in the distance.
Makes what we do
worth it.
Gems, trinkets, treasure and coins.
Why do we adventure?
Because, this is who we are.
We fight, laugh, joke and share a bond like a family to survive
So that I can return to tell a story or two about a band of heroes I know.
